Departments

Both basic and applied research are represented in the scientific program of the Department for Genetics. The highly autonomous scientific groups are the basic units of the Department. The projects of the Department introduce current techniques and latest results of molecular biology, genetics and genomics into agricultural research.

The Animal Biotechnology Department was re-established in 2011 and it is currently made of three research groups. The ultimate aim is to follow the main streams of the international research directions and adapt them to the need of the Hungarian partners. The Ruminant Genome Biology group lead by László Hiripi Ph.D. focuses on exploring the genetic background of bovine diseases.

The Plant Tissue Culture Group's main profile is producing homozygous doubled haploid (DH) pepper lines by in vitro anther culture. They also work on development of DH cucumber as a research-development project. The Department of Genomics was established with three groups in 2015. The Agricultural Genomics and Informatics Group was pioneering in the genom sequencing of mangalica, a fatty-type local pig breed. The Group contributed to the whole genome sequencing of a Salmonella subspecies and the group's ongoing red deer genome sequencing project is in an advanced stage.
