ABC - Department of Genomics

The Department of Genomics was established with three groups in 2015. The Agricultural Genomics and Informatics Group was pioneering in the genom sequencing of mangalica, a fatty-type local pig breed. The Group contributed to the whole genome sequencing of a Salmonella subspecies and the group's ongoing red deer genome sequencing project is in an advanced stage. The expected updating of the group's computer facility could promote the collecting of novel genome information with special emphasis on old Hungarian animal breeds, agricultural plant species and microorganisms.

The Diagnostic group's main focus is the adaptation and development of sensitive and fast new molecular biology methods for detection of virus infection in grapevine and in fruit trees.

The Plant Tissue Culture Group's main profile is producing homozygous doubled haploid (DH) pepper lines by in vitro anther culture. They also work on development of DH cucumber as a research-development project.

 

Organizational subunits

The primary research field of the Agricultral Genomics and Bioinformatics Group is the mammalian and honeybee (Apis Mellifera) genetics and genomics. Within this research topic our primarily goal is the genome sequencing of native domesticated and wild animals.

The primary research field of the Applied Wild and Farm Animal Genomics Group is mammalian and honey bee genetics and genomics. Within this topic our main goal is the genome sequencing of native domestic and wild animals, and the use of genome sequences for marker development.

Our group, established in 2013 aims to adapt and develop new, sensitive molecular biology methods based virus diagnostics. We not provide service, but work on basic and applied research, which can establish new diagnostic methods, help us to better know plant viruses and phytoplasmas which knowledge can be used in plant protection strategies. Small RNA HTS is in our focus and we think that virus detection, based on this method will revolutionized virus diagnostics in the next years.

Tissue Culture Laboratory offers high level service on dihaploid (DH) pepper production, moreover we do research and development on DH cucumber.

1. Production of homozygous doubled haploid (DH) pepper lines by in vitro anther culture, according to the interest of the pepper breeders
2. Development of in vitro ovary culture technique to produce DH cucumber.
